SanDisk’s plunge highlights the high-volatility nature of the storage sector
As an important representative of the AI storage concept, SanDisk’s share price dropped by about 11% in a single day, again reflecting the high elasticity and high risk of the storage segment within the AI industry chain. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell by more than 5%, with the entire chip industry clearly under pressure.
Over the past year, AI server buildouts have driven rapid growth in HBM, high-performance SSDs, and enterprise storage demand, and the market has steadily increased the valuations of related companies. But as investors begin to worry about the pace of future AI infrastructure spending, storage stocks have become the first major targets for funds to lock in profits.
In fact, the storage industry has long shown clear cyclical characteristics. When demand is strong, profitability rises quickly; once capital expenditures slow down, prices and profits are often pressured in tandem. Therefore, in the AI era, while the storage industry offers greater room for growth, stock-price volatility will be even more pronounced.
Over the long term, AI training, inference, and cloud computing will still require large amounts of storage resources, so industry demand will not disappear suddenly. In the short run, the adjustment mainly reflects changes in market sentiment; what truly determines a company’s value is still the growth in orders over the next few quarters, product competitiveness, and the ability to realize earnings.
