The DeepSeek era of lithography machines: a short essay that sent US chip stocks tumbling
On July 27 (Monday), US chip stocks collectively plunged.
The trigger wasn’t earnings reports or policy, but a short essay about China-made DUV lithography machines.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, TheInformation reported that a company backed by Chinese state-owned capital has begun mass production of its independently developed DUV (deep-ultraviolet) lithography machines.
The report says:
1. In 2026, it plans to produce about 5 units;
2. In 2027, it will expand to about 20 units;
3. The first batch of equipment is expected to be delivered to domestic fabs such as SMIC, HUAHONG Semiconductor, and CXMT.
What really tightens the market is not 5 units or 20 units.
It’s that the market is starting to realize:
China-made lithography machines may be entering their own "DeepSeek moment."
What truly changed market perception with DeepSeek isn’t that its parameters outperformed OpenAI, but that it proved—Chinese companies can also carve out their own technical roadmap.
Now, if domestic DUV truly reaches the mass-production stage, the significance is similar.
It may not immediately challenge ASML, nor achieve full replacement in the short term, but it means China’s semiconductor equipment is moving from the "lab" to the "production line," from "R&D validation" to "commercial applications."
What the capital market trades is always the future.
As the news circulated, ASML, the Dutch lithography equipment leader, fell by more than 7% at one point during intraday trading.
US semiconductor and memory segments also faced broad pressure:
SanDisk fell by about 12% at one point;
SK hynix fell by about 7%;
Micron Technology fell by about 5%.
Of course, for now, the related information mainly comes from media reports citing insiders, and the companies involved have not yet publicly confirmed their mass-production plans or delivery details.
But no matter what the final progress looks like, this "short essay" has already made one thing clear:
What the market is most worried about isn’t how many lithography machines China can build today—it’s whether China is starting to replicate the kind of expectation shift that DeepSeek brought.
If DeepSeek rewrote the global AI valuation logic, then the market will also begin to think:
Will lithography machines have their own "DeepSeek moment"?
SMIC-2.74%
ASML-4.39%
SNDK-14.78%
SKHY-9.12%
MU-8.91%
