Circle Acquires Nearly 1,000 IBM Blockchain Patents!

The battle for institutional blockchain infrastructure just took a massive leap forward. Circle (the issuer behind the USDC stablecoin) has officially acquired a massive intellectual property portfolio from tech giant IBM, cementing itself as a dominant force in Web3 infrastructure.

The Acquisition
Circle purchased fundamental assets from IBM's blockchain patent portfolio, encompassing over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.

Top U.S. Holder
With this massive IP injection, Circle officially becomes the leading holder of blockchain patents in the United States.
Beyond Just Crypto
The acquired patents don't just cover core blockchain tech. They span banking, financial services, insurance, supply chain verification, enterprise infrastructure, and secure cloud operations.

 Fueling the "Internet Financial System"
This isn't just a defensive IP play; Circle is aggressively building out its ecosystem.

Circle explicitly stated that this IP will directly support its foundational products, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and Arc (its enterprise-grade blockchain designed as an economic OS).

Interestingly, Circle noted the patents will also accelerate their push into "agentic financial tools" hinting at automated, AI-driven on-chain financial infrastructure.

As traditional finance (TradFi) rapidly integrates with blockchain technology, owning the foundational intellectual property is a massive moat. By absorbing IBM’s pioneering blockchain patents, Circle is ensuring that as global banks and enterprises move on-chain, they will likely be relying heavily on infrastructure that Circle owns, builds, or licenses. #circle

Circle secures nearly a thousand IBM patents—effectively keeping the keys to the underlying infrastructure of blockchain in its own hands. USDC already has a compliance advantage, and now with a patent moat, enterprise-grade blockchain services in the future will likely have to go through Circle’s ecosystem. The direction of AI-driven financial tools is also very forward-looking; it seems Circle isn’t just building stablecoins—it’s aiming to become the operating system for Web3 finance.

This move is too aggressive—Circle wants to become the infrastructure king.

IBM’s patents are highly valuable. Circle made a smart move here—going forward, banks that put things on-chain will have to pay Circle a toll.
