Wallet Security and Anti-Scam Guide — “Don’t regret it after your assets get stolen: engrave these seven security iron rules in your mind”
In the crypto space, technical analysis and fundamental research can only determine whether you’ll make money, but security awareness determines whether your principal is still there. Every day, a large number of users suffer heavy losses due to phishing, authorization vulnerabilities, and private key leaks—some are even veterans. Asset security is 1, and returns are the zeros after it. Without this 1, everything is just talk. The seven iron rules below—I hope you’ll never need them, but you must know them.
Iron Rule 1: Never tell anyone your private key or seed phrase—no matter what. Whether it’s a phone call from someone claiming to be “official customer service,” or a “verify your identity” prompt that pops up from a fake website—if they ask for your private key or seed phrase, it’s 100% a scam. Remember: real official platforms will never ask you for these details for any reason. It’s recommended to write down your seed phrase by hand on paper and store it in two separate secure locations (for example, a home safe and a bank safety deposit box). Absolutely do not screenshot it and save it in your phone gallery or cloud drive.
Iron Rule 2: Regularly check and revoke contract approvals (Approve). When you use a DEX (decentralized exchange) or participate in mining, you often authorize a DApp to manage your tokens. If you don’t revoke this authorization in time, once that DApp is attacked or the project team does harm, your wallet assets could be wiped out completely. It’s recommended that every 1–2 weeks, you use the “Revoke” function in a block explorer (such as Etherscan), or the built-in authorization management tools in wallets like Gate, to check and revoke any authorizations you don’t need.
Iron Rule 3: Distinguish between cold wallets and hot wallets. Assets you plan to leave idle for the long term must be placed in a cold wallet (a hardware wallet or a phone/computer that’s completely offline). Hot wallets (such as MetaMask or mobile app wallets) should only hold a small amount for daily trading and interactions—like you wouldn’t carry all your possessions in your pocket when you go out. Since cold wallets never connect to the internet, they’re almost impossible for hackers to attack remotely.
Iron Rule 4: Be wary of “zero transfers” and “dust attacks.” If your wallet suddenly receives 0.0001 of an unknown token, or a very small NFT, under no circumstances should you click to view or interact. This is very likely a hacker “phishing” attempt—meant to lure you into visiting a malicious website. The correct approach is to ignore it completely, as if you never saw it.
Iron Rule 5: Carefully verify the transfer address. Before transferring, you must verify character by character for the first and last few characters of the recipient address. Some Trojan viruses can alter your clipboard: you copy address A, but when you paste it, it turns into address B (the hacker’s address). It’s recommended that for every transfer, first send a small test amount. After you confirm it arrived, then transfer the larger amount—yes, it costs a bit more in fees, but it can protect your main funds.
Iron Rule 6: Web or App links only recognize official channels. Don’t Google “Gate.io” and click the ad links—many phishing sites win by bidding for top rankings. Be sure to add the official website to your bookmarks, or obtain the correct URL through the official Twitter. In addition, make sure to enable the platform’s “anti-phishing code” feature. All legitimate emails will include this unique code; if there isn’t one, it’s a scam email.
Iron Rule 7: Don’t fall for “airdrops” and “insider information.” Anything that makes you transfer first to “activate your wallet” in order to claim an airdrop is a scam. Anyone who pulls you into a group and guarantees “100x returns” is either a fraudster or a shill. Keep greed in check—that’s how you protect your wallet.
Safety isn’t a small matter. I suggest you save these seven iron rules and review them every few months. On the road to financial freedom, be careful—safe sailing for thousands of years means always putting safety first.
