This news is really shocking and worrying. What’s shocking is that Somali pirates are apparently able to stage a comeback, and their tactics have upgraded—what used to be small speedboats harassing ships now directly involves hijacking cargo vessels as mobile bases. The technical and organizational capabilities required shouldn’t be underestimated. What’s worrying is that global shipping will have to stay on high alert again; insurance costs and security expenses will rise, and in the end aren’t we consumers the ones who pay for it? I hope the international community can come up with more effective countermeasures—don’t just hold meetings and shout slogans.
