An Iranian merchant vessel was attacked in the Caspian Sea; Iran’s foreign minister: We must respond, under no circumstances.

On the evening of July 26 local time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian Araghchi posted on a social media platform that Ukraine attacked an Iranian merchant ship, resulting in the death of a crew member; he said the move “openly violates the UN Charter.” Araghchi stated that he had spoken by phone separately with Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and clearly said that Ukraine’s action “must not go unanswered.” Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously issued a statement saying that on the 25th, an Iranian merchant ship was attacked by Ukraine in the Caspian Sea and then an explosion occurred.
