SEC Considers 24 Hour Stock Trading - A New Era for Traditional Markets

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will examine the possibility of 24-hour U.S. Equity trading. On September 17, a public roundtable discussion will be held on obstacles and difficulties such as overnight trading infrastructure, market stability, investor protection and readiness of operations.

Chairman Paul Atkins spoke about a new era in financial markets. The market is moving to a new day – and night – for U.S. Equities.

The new trading system aims to close the gap between traditional stock markets and global financial markets.

Nowadays, it is common for investors to have access to investments outside traditional trading hours.

So far, the SEC has approved 24X Exchange and their 23-hour trading schedule, while NYSE, Nasdaq and Cboe have all filed their proposed extended hours.

The adoption of this new system has been influenced by digital assets, which trade 24/7 without scheduled market closings. Markets are moving with the preferences of an investor base that has grown accustomed to non-stop trading.

The proposed extension of market hours may present new opportunities for international investors. However, officials will need to focus on issues concerning liquidity, market volatility and reliability of technology and access to fair trading on the markets.

Could financial markets never sleep in the future?

What are your thoughts, will trading be 24 hours and a day from now on? Should traditional markets preserve the regular trading hours?
