Intel Just Printed Its Fastest Growth in 15 Years And the Story Beneath the Numbers Is Even Wilder
Let's get the headline out of the way first, because it's genuinely staggering: Intel's Q2 revenue hit $16.13 billion, up 25% year-over-year. That's not a gentle recovery it's the strongest quarterly revenue growth this company has recorded since Q3 2011. Fifteen years. Think about what the semiconductor industry looked like fifteen years ago and you start to grasp the magnitude of what just happened.
Adjusted EPS of $0.42 nearly doubled the Street's $0.21 consensus. Revenue beat estimates by roughly $1.7 billion — not a rounding error, not a modest upside, but an absolute demolition of expectations. Non-GAAP net income swung to $2.2 billion from a $441 million loss in the same quarter last year. Gross margin climbed to 41.8% under non-GAAP, up over 12 percentage points year-over-year, clawing back from the brutal 2.5% GAAP margin recorded a year ago. Operating margin under non-GAAP hit 17.2%, compared to negative 3.9% twelve months prior. The margin recovery alone is a narrative most people are sleeping on.
But here's where it gets genuinely interesting and where the "just another AI bounce" critique starts to fall apart.
The Data Center & AI segment posted $6.3 billion in revenue, up 59% year-over-year. That's more than double the company's overall growth rate. This isn't Intel riding a general semiconductor uplift; this is a structural shift where its AI-driven business is pulling the entire enterprise forward at a fundamentally different velocity. DCAI beat analyst estimates of $5.54 billion by nearly $760 million. When a single segment grows at 2.4× the corporate average and still exceeds its own consensus by double-digit percentages, you're not witnessing cyclical demand you're watching a platform transition.
Client Computing & Physical AI (CCPG) came in at $8.9 billion, up 13%. Solid, not spectacular, but it confirms that the AI PC thesis has legs. Intel's Core Ultra processors are reaching 130+ customers for edge AI and robotics applications. The PC isn't dead — it's being reborn as an inference endpoint.
Then there's the foundry. Intel Foundry revenue hit $5.8 billion, up 31% nearly double the 16% growth it posted in Q1. Operating losses in the foundry business shrank by more than $1 billion year-over-year. Intel 18A-P has entered risk production, and ASML confirmed that Intel has become the first company in the industry to ship high-volume logic product using High-NA EUV lithography, with select Panther Lake layers dual-qualified on the EXE:5000 platform at yields matched to the incumbent NXE system. This is not a theoretical milestone chips are physically shipping to customers on High-NA EUV right now. That puts Intel two years ahead of where most industry observers expected the technology to reach commercial viability.
CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over in March 2025, used the earnings call to deliver a message that cuts in two directions. On one hand: "AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute, and Intel is well-positioned to capture sustainable growth across our CPU franchise, ASICs, advanced packaging, and vast wafer foundry network." On the other: the industry is facing "one of the most severe supply constraints in its history across leading-edge logic, silicon wafers, memory, and substrates," and "these shortages will persist for the foreseeable future."
That dual message — massive demand paired with structural supply bottlenecks is the real tension underneath this quarter. Intel is raising its FY26 capex plan from $18 billion to $20 billion, with CFO David Zinsner indicating 2027 capex will be "significantly above" 2026 levels. The €5 billion European manufacturing expansion for Xeon 6 and next-generation Xeon processors was announced. This is a company investing ahead of demand, not catching up to it — which is either the right strategic call or a potentially punishing commitment depending on whether AI compute demand sustains its current trajectory.
Q3 guidance came in at $15.8–$16.8 billion vs. $15.06 billion consensus, with non-GAAP EPS of $0.38 vs. $0.27 expected. Even the forward outlook is beating estimates, which tells you Intel's management sees the momentum as durable, not transient.
The stock reaction, though, is the part nobody expected and everyone should study. After-hours initially surged 13%. By Friday's regular session, INTC fell nearly 8%, closing around $92. Why? Two forces collided. First, the $11.033 billion GAAP net loss driven by restructuring charges and an accounting writedown tied to the Altera divestiture spooked investors who scan headlines before reading footnotes. That number sits below the operating line and doesn't touch the actual business profitability, but in a market that trades on sentiment as much as fundamentals, a billion-dollar red number on the income statement creates its own gravity. Second, the capex escalation triggered a legitimate debate: is Intel investing wisely or overcommitting? The stock had already run up over 170% year-to-date before July's 28% pullback. That kind of momentum creates fragility when you're priced for perfection, even a perfect quarter can disappoint if it comes with a heavier spend commitment.
Here's my read: this quarter is legitimately transformative for Intel. The 59% DCAI growth isn't fluff it's real silicon shipping into real data centers at scale. The foundry milestone with High-NA EUV is an engineering achievement that resets Intel's competitive positioning against TSMC on the most advanced node in the industry. The margin recovery from near-zero to above-40% demonstrates that the revenue mix shift toward higher-margin AI silicon is already flowing through the P&L. Lip-Bu Tan inherited a company that was written off by half the analyst community; sixteen months later, he's presiding over the fastest growth Intel has seen in a generation.
The supply shortage warning is not a threat it's a strategic signal. When the CEO of a foundry operator says shortages will persist, he's simultaneously telling you: demand is outstripping capacity, and we're the ones building capacity. That's a bullish framing if you believe Intel can execute on its manufacturing ramp. The capex raise is the company putting capital behind that belief.
The GAAP loss is a distraction for anyone who actually reads financial statements. The restructuring and Altera-related charges are one-time in nature and sit below operating income. The actual business generated $1.8 billion in GAAP operating profit with an 11.1% margin a 35.8 percentage point swing from the same quarter a year ago when operating margin was negative 24.7%. That's not a turnaround story. That's a completed turnaround, with the remaining question being how far the growth curve extends.
Intel is no longer asking whether AI demand is real. It's answering how much of that demand it can capture and how fast it can build the infrastructure to capture more. Q2 2026 wasn't a beat. It was a statement.
