Five years after the implementation of Bitcoin law, the share of cryptocurrencies in El Salvador’s remittance market remains only 0.7%. In the first half of 2026, El Salvador received about $35.4 million in household remittances through digital currency channels, while the total remittances during the same period were about $5.06 billion. Although the size of crypto remittances grew 39.1% year over year in the same period, banks and traditional remittance institutions still process more than 84% of remittances. Reducing the cost of cross-border remittances was one of the key reasons the El Salvador government promoted Bitcoin adoption. (Bitcoin com)
