Gate Event Contracts from Scratch—Complete Operation Guide
For users who are encountering event contracts for the first time, understanding the full operation process is crucial. Below is a detailed operation guide for Gate event contracts.
Step 1: Preparation
First, you need to update the Gate App to version v8.28.5 or above. After opening the app, go to the Contracts (Futures/Contracts) page, then switch to the Event Contracts category. First-time users need to complete the innovation trading disclaimer quiz and accept the user agreement. You also need to complete identity verification.
For funds, Gate uses a unified main account system. Users can transfer funds between their spot and trading accounts to the event contract account with a single click. Transfers are credited in real time and with zero fees.
Step 2: Choose a Trading Mode
When you enter event contracts for the first time, the default is Simple Mode. If you’re a beginner, it’s recommended that you start here to get familiar with the product. If you need more trading tools, click the switch at the top-right corner of the trading page to switch to Professional (Pro) Mode.
Step 3: Choose the Asset and Duration
Currently, event contracts support two assets: BTC and ETH. There are four trading duration options: 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, and 4 hours. Beginners are advised to start with shorter cycles of 5 minutes or 15 minutes. These durations offer more frequent trading opportunities and make it easier to quickly build experience.
Step 4: Determine the Direction and Place an Order
After analyzing the market, if you believe the price will rise, choose Call; if you believe it will fall, choose Put. In Simple Mode, you only need to enter the trade amount to place a market order quickly. In Pro Mode, you can select your preferred price from the order book, fill in the contract quantity, and then submit your order.
Step 5: Position Management
After placing an order, you can choose to hold the contract until settlement. Alternatively, at any time before the duration ends, you can sell your position in the order book to lock in profits or cut losses early. This flexibility means traders don’t have to passively wait for the settlement result.
Step 6: Settlement
If you do not manually close your position, it will be automatically settled after the duration ends. If your prediction is correct, each contract is settled at 1 USDT; if your prediction is wrong, the contract value becomes zero. In both cases, no settlement fees are charged.
Part 4: A Risk Management Revolution for Event Contracts—Why It Changes the Game Rules
In traditional crypto derivatives trading, risk management is always the biggest headache for traders. Leverage amplifies not only profits but also losses; one unexpected price move can lead to your position being forcibly liquidated. The introduction of Gate event contracts fundamentally changes this situation.
Clearly Defined Risk Boundaries
The most core risk management feature of event contracts is “prepaying in full.” Each contract must be paid in USDT in advance. This means that at the moment you place the order, you already know your maximum possible loss—that is the amount you投入. There is no margin call, no liquidation risk, and no hidden borrowing costs.
Key Difference from Traditional Perpetual Contracts
The issue with perpetual contracts is that even if you are correct about the long-term direction, short-term adverse price movement may still lead to your position being cleared. Event contracts remove leverage entirely: your position will not be liquidated, and you only need to care about the price direction at the end of the cycle. This design allows traders to focus on market analysis itself, rather than constantly worrying about liquidation risk.
An Early Exit Mechanism Provides Extra Control
Event contracts also offer an early closing feature. If market momentum works in your favor, you can sell the contracts early to lock in profits. If market sentiment turns against you, you can exit before settlement to reduce potential losses. This active secondary market gives traders greater control over each position.
Suitable for Traders at Different Levels
For beginners, clearly defined risk boundaries mean they can start learning and practicing with a small amount of capital (minimum 1.5 USDT), without having to worry about suffering losses beyond expectations due to lack of experience. For experienced traders, event contracts provide a disciplined way to express short-term market views, without exposing them to liquidation risks from leverage.
Risk Warning
Although event contracts eliminate leverage risk, market risk still exists. Short-term market conditions may be highly unstable, and sudden economic announcements or unexpected geopolitical events can quickly change asset directions. Users should understand the contract structure, settlement conditions, and the possible maximum potential loss.
