If You Could Go Back to the Day You Bought Your First Crypto, What Would You Tell Yourself?
I thought about this question today, and my answer surprised me.
It wouldn't be:
"Buy more Bitcoin."
It wouldn't be:
"Avoid that one bad trade."
And it definitely wouldn't be:
"Here's the next coin that's going to 100x."
Instead, I'd tell myself this:
"Don't confuse excitement with understanding."
When I first entered crypto, everything felt exciting.
Every chart looked like an opportunity.
Every new project sounded revolutionary.
Every dip looked like a bargain.
I believed enthusiasm was enough.
It wasn't.
Over time, I realised that excitement fades, but good habits stay.
Learning how to manage risk.
Accepting that being wrong is part of investing.
Taking profits without feeling guilty.
Admitting when an investment thesis no longer makes sense.
Those lessons have been far more valuable than any single winning trade.
If I could speak to the version of myself who bought that first crypto asset, I wouldn't hand over a list of future winners.
I'd hand over a notebook and say:
"Write down why you're making every investment. One day, those notes will teach you more than the profits ever could."
The market changes.
Narratives change.
But the ability to learn from your own decisions is what turns experience into wisdom.
So here's my question for you:
If you had five minutes with the version of yourself who bought your very first cryptocurrency, what advice would you give them?
