Russia's Largest Bank Sberbank to Launch Crypto Trading Infrastructure by December
Russia's biggest lender, Sberbank, plans to roll out cryptocurrency trading infrastructure and a digital asset depository by December as the country accelerates the integration of crypto into its regulated financial system.
Key points:
• Sberbank aims to launch a digital depository by Dec. 1 to record crypto ownership and process most transactions off chain. • The platform will support crypto custody, deposits, withdrawals, and transfers through active client wallets. • Russia's new crypto trading framework takes effect on Sept. 1, with licensed intermediaries becoming mandatory from July 2027. • Public trading will initially be limited to highly liquid cryptocurrencies meeting strict market capitalization and trading volume requirements. • Qualified investors will gain access to a broader range of digital assets, while crypto payments for goods and services inside Russia remain prohibited. • Sberbank has already expanded its digital asset offerings through Bitcoin linked structured bonds and a Bitcoin backed lending pilot.
The move marks another major step in Russia's strategy to bring cryptocurrency under a regulated financial framework while expanding institutional access to digital assets.
