Many people focus only on ROI in copy trading.

I also check how the trader manages risk. A steady trader with controlled losses is often better than someone with huge profits and huge drawdowns.

What's more important to you in copy trading?

Haha, a lot of people rush in as soon as they see returns doubling, and then get liquidated before regretting that they didn’t look at the risks—you should copy this viewpoint for every new beginner.

You’re absolutely right—if the ROI is high but you can’t control drawdowns, it’s pointless. Steady and disciplined is the only way to follow trades for the long term.

I think it still depends on the trader’s mindset—whether they can strictly execute stop-losses when they’re at a loss. And even if the ROI is higher from “holding through losses,” they won’t touch it.

A piece of advice for new people: first look at the historical drawdown curve from the past three months, then decide whether to follow in—don’t let short-term outsized profits go to your head.

I set a standard for myself: the maximum drawdown should not exceed 10%, the win rate should be no lower than 60%, and I’ll be satisfied as long as the monthly returns stay consistently above 5%.

This reminds me of the Dunning–Kruger effect—people who focus only on ROI often underestimate the risks, and only realize it once a drawdown hits.

Some traders on Gate.io keep drawdowns controlled within 5%. Even though the ROI is only 30%, they feel much more at ease.

Well said—high returns with high drawdowns are essentially just betting on the outcome; in the long run, there’s a high chance it all goes to zero. Steady compounding is the real skill.

Besides risk control, I also look at trading frequency and position management. Even if the ROI is extremely high, if they’re opening trades chaotically at high frequency, I’ll still pass right away.
