Local time on July 20, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement regarding the U.S. government’s announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on multiple Canadian goods. Carney said this is the latest move in a series of unilateral trade actions by the United States that violates the “U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement” (the USMCA). Canada, he said, is standing in solidarity to respond to these “threats to Canadian sovereignty,” and is taking action to protect its economy and citizens. Carney said that over the past 18 months, the United States has been changing its various trade relationships, including those covered by the USMCA, so Canada has put forward a series of detailed and comprehensive proposals to address the current dispute and modernize the USMCA.
