Wall Street's Midnight Shift: The SEC Is Building the Bridge Crypto Already Crossed
For over a century, the opening bell at 9:30 a.m. ET has been the heartbeat of American capitalism. The closing bell at 4:00 p.m. the silence that followed. That rhythm is about to break.
On September 17, the SEC will host a public roundtable at its Washington headquarters to discuss something that would have sounded absurd five years ago: 24-hour trading in U.S. equity markets. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins didn't mince words: "We are moving towards a new day and night in the U.S. equity markets."
The agenda covers overnight trading logistics, operational resilience, and the thorny trade-offs between expanded access and investor protection. A public comment period is open. The roundtable will be streamed live on the SEC's website.
This isn't theoretical anymore. 24X National Exchange the first SEC-approved exchange fully dedicated to 23/5 equities trading is already operational, awaiting a temporary SIP exemption to launch overnight sessions before December. Cboe has received SEC approval for extended trading hours on single-stock options. Nasdaq is engaging regulators for 24/5 trading targeting the second half of 2026, pending regulatory alignment. NYSE has surveyed stakeholders about weekend and round-the-clock sessions. The SIPs themselves submitted a plan amendment in December 2025 to extend operating hours from 8:00 p.m. Sunday to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with a one-hour technical pause each night target launch: December 2026.
Even the London Stock Exchange is building LSE 24, a separate near-continuous weekday venue, with client testing expected before year-end.
The momentum is undeniable. But here's what makes it unprecedented: the force driving it isn't coming from inside traditional finance. It's coming from crypto.
Bitcoin doesn't observe weekends. Liquidity doesn't pause for holidays. Leverage doesn't wait for Monday morning clearing desks. For years, 24/7 markets have been crypto's native operating model not a feature, but the baseline expectation. An entire generation of traders grew up executing positions at 2 a.m. on a Sunday without thinking twice. When they look at equity markets closing at 4:00 p.m. and staying dark for 16 hours, they don't see discipline. They see obsolescence.
That cultural inversion is what's really pushing TradFi past its time boundaries. Asian investors want to trade U.S. stocks during their daytime. Global capital doesn't want to sit idle for 60+ hours every weekend while news cycles and macro events compound unchecked. The CFTC has already acknowledged that 24/7 trading suits crypto's nature but cautioned that it may not be appropriate for all derivatives markets. SIFMA has warned that around-the-clock equity trading could strain the infrastructure underpinning U.S. markets: clearing, settlement, surveillance, staffing, and the very definition of a "business day."
These aren't trivial objections. A market that never closes is a market where risk never sleeps. Thin overnight liquidity can amplify price dislocations. Fatigue-induced errors in 3 a.m. trading desks aren't hypothetical. And the one-hour technical pause proposed by the SIPs 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET nightly is a tacit admission that even "continuous" markets need to breathe.
But the direction is set. The SEC isn't asking whether to go 24-hour. It's asking how. Atkins explicitly framed this as alignment with markets that already trade continuously not as innovation, but as convergence.
Crypto built the proof of concept. Now Wall Street has to build the plumbing. The exchanges filing proposals, the SIPs extending hours, the regulators drafting guardrails they're all responding to a demand that crypto normalized first. The question is no longer whether traditional markets can operate around the clock. It's whether their infrastructure, institutions, and people can survive a world where the market never dims.
September 17 won't answer that. But it will be the first time the SEC formally brings all the stakeholders into the same room to try.
