Iranian proxy forces threaten the safety of “Air Force One”; Trump temporarily replaces his aircraft during the NATO summit

Golden Finance News reported, citing The New York Times, that multiple insiders said that during this month’s NATO summit in which U.S. President Trump participated, U.S. authorities found that Iranian proxy forces might plan an attack on Trump and his presidential aircraft, and the Secret Service advised him to change planes when leaving Turkey. The report said that when Trump arrived in Ankara, Turkey, he was using a new Boeing 747-8 aircraft donated by Qatar, but the plane had not yet been equipped with advanced defensive systems on the same level as those of the traditional “Air Force One.” After the U.S. government identified the relevant threat, the U.S. Secret Service advised Trump to depart on an older version of Air Force One. Insiders said the threat was not specifically targeting the Qatar-donated aircraft, but Trump himself and any aircraft he would be traveling on. Previously, Trump said the plane change was to allow U.S. military personnel stationed in the UK to tour the new aircraft, and he denied that it was related to security factors. But The New York Times reported that the decision to switch aircraft was actually related to a security assessment. The report noted that the Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8 will still be planned for upgrades and retrofits in the future to enhance the security capabilities required for the presidential aircraft. The White House said the aircraft is “fully capable of ensuring the safety of presidential travel” and will undergo about one month of additional upgrades in the fall of this year. This incident comes as the U.S.-Iran conflict continues to escalate. The report said U.S. officials had previously received intelligence regarding possible Iranian plans to target Trump’s actions, and the U.S. side remains highly alert to the threat level to the president’s safety.
