Twenty-five technology giants, including Nvidia, signed an open letter opposing the U.S. imposing restrictions on open-source AI on July 24. On July 24, Microsoft released an open letter titled “Open Weights and U.S. AI Leadership.” The letter was signed by 25 companies and organizations, including Nvidia, Meta, IBM, Dell, Hugging Face, Mistral, and a16z. The open letter calls on the U.S. government not to restrict open-source AI models. It states that open-source models can lower industry barriers, prevent a handful of big tech firms from monopolizing the market, and do not pose higher security risks than proprietary systems. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang posted his first-ever message on X to support the open letter, emphasizing that open-source models can enhance security and enable countries to build independent AI capabilities. The publication of the open letter was partly driven by Moonshot AI’s release of the open-source Kimi K3 model on July 16. In benchmark tests, the model outperformed leading proprietary models from Anthropic and OpenAI, while charging only one-third to one-fifth of their price. #夏日创作营
