This Red Sea blockade is directly affecting China’s energy imports, so we need to find alternative shipping routes as soon as possible.

In fact, Chinese shipowners have already started laying out routes that detour via the Cape of Good Hope. Although the cost is higher, at least it’s safer. But doing so will inevitably increase freight rates and extend delivery timelines, and the impact on domestic refineries and downstream industries should not be underestimated. Preparations need to be made in advance.

The Houthis are being pretty ruthless—they’re not even sparing Chinese oil tankers. It looks like the global supply chain will get tight again, and oil prices may rise for a round.
