Wall Street Eyes 24-Hour Trading as Crypto's Always-On Culture Disrupts Markets By CoinMarketCap - September 6, 2024 The established Wall Street world is preparing for a revolution. America's top securities regulator may soon permit longer trading hours, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) planning a new roundtable discussion on transitioning toward a 24-hour stock market system. The agency will host a September 17 meeting to gauge Wall Street's readiness for round-the-clock trading of US equities.
The meeting aims to tackle practical aspects like overnight trading systems, market stability, operational issues, and how exchanges will adapt.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins called it a “new era” where markets would operate both “day and night.” He stated, “Our current trading hours are based on an era with vastly different trade execution and post-trade processes,” adding, “In today’s increasingly interconnected and globalized markets, the concept of a global, 24/7 marketplace has begun to gain more traction.” The SEC had already approved 24X Exchange's bid for 23-hour trading weeks ago. Also, the NYSE, Nasdaq, and Cboe all filed plans recently to establish extended trading.
The influence of Bitcoin, Etherium, and altcoins is undeniable here.
Crypto markets, having always operated 24/7, have successfully proven the global participants' expectation that trading can happen around the clock. As such the SEC, like many governing bodies across the world, is exploring longer hours in public markets. The shift to continuous trading presents clear advantages - greater access for global investors but requires careful examination of liquidity, volatility, security, and safeguards.
“Extended trading hours might seem like the inevitable next step, closing the gap between traditional markets and digital currencies,” analysts say. But, “this change necessitates careful consideration of potential volatilities and securities to best protect investors.” With digital assets continually disrupting financial markets, it now appears stock and cryptocurrency will be able to share the marketplace round-the-clock.
So, should the move towards 24-hour stock markets better enhance global access, or will it pose more risks to investors?
