$BTC Korea’s two storage giants win big orders from two AI giants
Samsung and SK hynix both secured major long-term HBM purchase orders from NVIDIA and AMD, sending a strong industry signal for the AI compute supply chain in this round. The news directly addresses two market concerns earlier on: AI compute demand slowing and the concentration of high-end HBM orders reaching a peak, thereby reinforcing the medium- to long-term logic of structural scarcity in high-end memory.
From the supply-and-demand landscape, both NVIDIA’s new-generation Rubin platform and AMD’s MI450 accelerators rely heavily on HBM4. The two AI giants diversify their inventory buildup, while also tying capacity to two Korean manufacturers to lock in production and mitigate single-supplier risk. SK hynix leverages its mature HBM manufacturing process to maintain a market-share advantage, while Samsung continues to capture incremental orders through its process and packaging capabilities. Long-term agreements lock in a revenue floor, smooth out volatility across memory cycles, and change the previous profit model that relied solely on spot price hikes.
However, it’s important to draw a rational boundary around the upside: orders are concentrated in the high-end HBM segment, so they cannot overturn forward-looking expectations of oversupply from general-purpose DDR and NAND capacity expansions. Differentiation within the sector will therefore continue. Meanwhile, HBM long-term contracts generally fix prices, so in the short term they are unlikely to capture the extra gains from spot price surges.
Mapping to market action: it can ease earlier panic-selling sentiment in the Korean memory sector and drive a short-term sentiment rebound. Over the medium to long term, the key focus is on tracking the release schedule of HBM4 yields and cloud-provider capital expenditure guidance. For China’s domestic industrial chain, there are potential indirect order transmission opportunities in HBM packaging/testing and equipment materials. #夏日创作营
