Many people think derivatives are dangerous. In reality, what’s truly dangerous isn’t leverage—it’s the lack of rules. When many people first touch derivatives, their first reaction is to think it’s gambling, that opening leverage is the same as pushing yourself toward liquidation. But in the end, derivatives only amplify how efficiently you use your capital—it won’t automatically make you money, and it won’t automatically make you lose money. What ultimately determines the outcome is still your position sizing and trading habits. For example, with the same $500 of capital: one person uses low leverage with a light position to participate, while another goes all-in to bet on direction. When the market trend is favorable, both may be able to make money, but the moment the market swings in the opposite direction, the gap shows up immediately.
The truly stable traders don’t just think about how much they can make; they first consider how much they can afford to lose at most. Before opening a trade, think it through: Where should your stop-loss be placed? What will you do if you’re wrong? Is this trade worth taking? Many people attribute losses to leverage being too high, but the truth is that low leverage with full allocation can be just as dangerous. With high leverage, if you control your position size well, you can still have your own rhythm.
What derivatives fear most isn’t leverage—it’s emotional trading. After a few winning trades, you feel invincible and start increasing your position size; after a losing trade, you rush to get back to breakeven and keep adding—this is where the account truly starts to spiral out of control. Leverage is just a tool; how you use it is what matters. In the end, you’ll find: direction determines whether you can make money, and risk control determines whether you have a chance to keep making money.
The market never lacks opportunities. What’s truly hard is maintaining your principal and your mindset—waiting until the next opportunity that belongs to you appears. $ETH
