From a Small Shop Bought by a 17-Year-Old High School Student to a $125k IPO: Jersey Mike’s to List on Gate’s IPO Access
On July 27, 2026, Gate’s “IPO Access” program, Phase Two—Jersey Mike’s (JMKE)—will officially open for intent-based subscriptions. This food-service giant, with more than 3,300 locations and annual revenue of $4.2 billion, is set to open an IPO subscription channel to users worldwide via the Gate platform. From a seaside small shop to a $10 billion valuation, Jersey Mike’s has taken 70 years to write a business story about perseverance, legacy, and growth.
I. The Starting Point: A Seaside Small Shop in New Jersey in 1956
In 1956, in Point Pleasant, a seaside town in New Jersey, USA, a sandwich shop called Mike’s Subs opened. The storefront was not large, selling a submarine sandwich common in the northeastern United States—long rolls cut open, filled with ham, beef, cheese, lettuce, and onions, then topped with an oil-and-vinegar dressing. Its main customers were local residents and the vacation crowds that poured in during summer.
What truly changed the fate of this small shop was a high school student named Peter Cancro. In 1971, the 14-year-old Cancro started working at Mike’s Subs. In 1975, the store was on the market for sale, and with only 17 years of age, Cancro made a remarkable decision—to buy it. Encouraged by his mother, he found his high school football coach, who happened to be a banker; ultimately, Cancro secured a loan of $125k from the coach to buy the shop.
Cancro renamed the store Jersey Mike’s, honoring its origin and signaling its New Jersey “bloodline.” In 1987, Jersey Mike’s officially began franchising. Over the following three-plus decades, the brand expanded steadily—reaching about 750 locations by 2014, and surpassing 1,000 locations in 2015.
Jersey Mike’s took a completely different path from Subway. Subway turned sandwiches into standardized industrial products, while Jersey Mike’s has worked to preserve the feel of a “street-side small shop”—slicing meat fresh in front of customers, and assembling sandwiches on the spot. This dedication to quality and experience has become its deepest brand moat.
