Burnham appointed former Defense Secretary John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Healey previously served as Defense Secretary in the Starmer government and resigned in June amid controversy over defense spending. Burnham also appointed Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary. Miliband served as Labour Party leader from 2010 to 2015 and later served as Energy Secretary in the Starmer government. In addition, Louise Haigh was appointed as the UK’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for the Duchy of Lancaster. Haigh previously served as Transport Secretary and resigned in November 2024; she is seen as an important supporter of Burnham. The Home Secretary of the Starmer government, Shabana Mahmood, will continue in her current role. On the 20th, Burnham was appointed by King Charles III of the UK as the new prime minister and authorized to form a new cabinet. (CGTN)
