Sam Altman’s World completes fundraising of $52.5 million, led by Pantera
The digital identity project World, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has announced the completion of a $52.5 million fundraise, conducted in the form of selling WLD tokens. All tokens received by buyers will be locked up for 12 months, with venture capital firm Pantera Capital leading the round. The funds will be used to expand the deployment of the “proof of human” identity system, integrating World ID into enterprise platforms and AI agents. Just a little over a year has passed since the previous token sale of $135 million.
(Background: World’s developer (originally Worldcoin) carried out layoffs! Orb iris scanning was banned by six countries)
(Additional context: Worldcoin completed a $115 million Series C round, with a16z participating for a third time—what did OpenAI founder get right?)
The digital identity project World announced the completion of a $52.5 million fundraise. The form is the sale of WLD tokens, with all tokens received by buyers locked up for 12 months, led by venture capital firm Pantera Capital.
The official describes this round as the first close. In addition to the lead investor Pantera Capital, participants include Bain Capital Crypto, WLD treasury company Eightco Holdings (Nasdaq: ORBS), Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto. The “first close” indicates the funding is not yet fully wrapped up, and there could be a second batch afterward.
The World Foundation said the money will be used to expand the deployment of the “proof of human” identity system, integrating World ID into enterprise platforms and AI agents. In plain terms, after AI content floods the internet, it provides a verifiable credential for the question of whether the “account on the other side” is a real human.
Where the money will be spent
World was co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Alex Blania. This fundraise lands exactly on the project’s third anniversary since going live. As of April 2026, nearly 18 million people worldwide have completed human verification, World App has more than 30 million users, and the service reaches 160 countries.
However, the rollout pace for verification devices is very different. There are about 589 physical sites, distributed across 14 countries (including Taiwan). The gap—software reaching 160 countries while hardware only reaches 14 countries—is exactly what this funding round aims to address.
In scale, this round is not that large. In May 2025, World used the same token-sale format to raise $135 million, led by a16z and Bain Capital Crypto—this time it is less than 40% of that figure. The 12-month lockup condition also indicates another thing: buyers can’t sell their tokens in the short term.
