Hand, foot and mouth disease in Japan has reached a pandemic alert level

Data released on the 14th by Japan’s National Institute of Health Crisis Management shows that from June 29 to July 5, Japan’s designated medical institutions nationwide reported about 16k hand, foot and mouth disease cases, with an average of 7.03 cases per medical institution, exceeding the benchmark value based on an average of 5 cases; nationwide, it has reached the epidemic alert level. According to the institute’s latest data, during the above period, Japan’s designated medical institutions nationwide reported 15,845 hand, foot and mouth disease cases, up by about 52% from 10,396 cases in the previous week. Of the country’s 47 prefectures, 27 have reached the epidemic alert level. In terms of the average number of cases reported per medical institution, Shimane Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, and Tokyo rank in the top three nationwide. (Xinhua)
