Crypto news flash: A U.S. federal criminal complaint shows that the FBI traced Bitrefill gift cards purchased via the Bitcoin addresses involved in the case, and, combined with Google cookies, phone records, and more than 500 Uber Eats delivery orders, identified the 21-year-old suspect Zyaire Wilkins. Wilkins is accused of providing funding and helping promote an operation that implanted malware in Steam games; about 8,000 devices were infected, and about 80 crypto wallets were stolen, with at least $220k taken. When the FBI searched his residence, it also found three sets of crypto wallet seed phrases: one Monero wallet had cumulatively received and sent about 1,233 XMR, with transaction activity worth about $382k, but the complaint did not confirm that this portion of funds was related to the victims’ losses. Wilkins has been charged with conspiracy to obtain information by computer for the purpose of gaining economic benefit.
