25 Tech Giants Sign a Joint Open Letter to Support Open-Weight AI Models

Jin10 Data, July 24 — Twenty-five U.S. technology companies, including IBM (IBM.N), Meta Platforms (META.O), Nvidia (NVDA.O), and Microsoft (MSFT.O), jointly signed an open letter calling for open-weight AI models. The open letter states that open-weight models are crucial to a healthy AI ecosystem. The United States faces a choice in the field of artificial intelligence regarding open-weight models. Admittedly, open-weight models do carry real and unique risks. But in fact, openness may be one of the most important paths to achieving AI safety and safeguards. Relying solely on closed models is not secure: they may be breached, misused, or fail in ways that are not detectable from the outside. Open-weight AI models allow a broader community of researchers and developers to examine their behavior, identify vulnerabilities, develop protective measures, and continually improve them over time.
