Brain-computer interface sees a major breakthrough: retinal chip approved for listing in Europe, helping patients regain vision

Golden Finance reports that on July 25, the U.S. startup Science Corp. has been approved to sell in the EU a retinal chip that can help “geographic atrophy”（GA） patients restore some vision. This is the first time the relevant device from a U.S. brain-computer interface (BCI) company has been rolled out at scale to the patient market, and it is an important milestone for the company toward BCI commercialization. Its long-term goal is to bring brain-implant devices to the market. According to Science Corp., its PRIMA brain-computer system is a new type of subretinal photovoltaic implant used together with dedicated eyeglasses. The glasses project near-infrared light onto the implant and convert it into electrical stimulation signals; the “amplification” feature allows patients to enlarge text. The implant is ultra-thin and enables seamless wireless integration.
