Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft defend open AI before Washington

25 companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Mistral, IBM, Palantir, and Hugging Face, have signed an open letter calling on US regulators not to restrict the development of open-weight AI models. In his first post on X, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wrote that open models “strengthen security, accelerate innovation, and ensure sovereignty.”

The letter comes amid threats of sanctions against Moonshot AI — the Chinese developer of Kimi K3, recognized as the strongest open model in the world. OSTP director Michael Kratsios publicly accused Moonshot of creating Kimi K3 through distillation from Anthropic’s Fable 5 model. Notably, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI did not sign the letter — it is they who would benefit most from restrictions on Chinese open-source developers.

The letter’s authors draw parallels with open-source software from the 1980s, arguing that an open AI ecosystem is more important than a single frontier model for long-term US leadership.
