Wall Street Wavers as Trump Tariffs Take Effect and Tech Sell-Off Continues
U.S. stocks traded cautiously on Friday as investors weighed the impact of new U.S. tariffs, rising geopolitical uncertainty, and continued weakness in major technology stocks. While markets attempted a modest rebound following Thursday's sharp decline, sentiment remained fragile amid concerns over inflation, artificial intelligence spending, and higher interest rates.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged slightly higher, while the S&P 500 traded near the flat line. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite slipped modestly as technology stocks continued to face selling pressure.
Tech Stocks Remain Under Pressure
Wall Street is still recovering from Thursday's steep sell-off, during which the "Magnificent Seven" technology companies collectively lost nearly $800 billion in market value.
Investor concerns intensified after Alphabet and Tesla reported earnings that highlighted significantly higher spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. While AI remains a long-term growth opportunity, rising capital expenditures have raised questions about future profitability and cash flow.
Not all technology companies struggled, however. Intel shares moved higher after the semiconductor giant reported quarterly earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations, offering some support to the broader chip sector.
New Trump Tariffs Officially Begin
Adding to market uncertainty, a new round of U.S. tariffs officially took effect overnight.
The latest Section 301 tariffs impose rates ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from many of the United States' largest trading partners. The measures are intended to strengthen domestic industries while addressing trade imbalances, although investors remain cautious about their potential impact on global economic growth and inflation.
The White House exempted several energy-related products from the new tariffs in an effort to reduce pressure on fuel prices.
Oil Prices Ease but Remain Elevated
Crude oil prices pulled back slightly after briefly climbing above $100 per barrel earlier in the week.
Brent crude traded below $98 on Friday, though it remains on track to post a strong weekly gain following heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Despite the decline, elevated energy prices continue to be closely monitored because they could slow progress in reducing inflation and influence future Federal Reserve policy decisions.
Key Economic Data in Focus
Investors are also watching several important economic reports that could shape market expectations.
The latest Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for both the manufacturing and services sectors will provide fresh insight into business activity across the U.S. economy. At the same time, new home sales data will offer another measure of consumer demand and overall economic strength.
These reports may influence expectations surrounding future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
Market Outlook
Although U.S. stocks attempted to stabilize following Thursday's sharp losses, investors remain cautious as multiple headwinds continue to pressure financial markets.
Ongoing geopolitical tensions, new trade policies, elevated bond yields, and uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence spending are likely to keep market volatility elevated in the coming weeks.
For cryptocurrency investors, broader movements in equity markets remain important, as Bitcoin and other digital assets have continued showing periods of correlation with traditional risk assets during major macroeconomic events.
