Tencent’s LLM team makes further adjustments: it establishes a foundation model department, with Yu Shunyu’s responsibilities expanded

Golden Finance reported that on the afternoon of July 23, Tencent issued an internal notice stating that it would establish a Foundation Model Department by merging the Large Language Model Department and the Multimodal Model Department, with all related businesses and teams fully integrated into the new department. Tencent’s Chief AI Scientist, Yao Shunyu, will concurrently serve as the head of the Foundation Model Department, reporting to Lu Shan, President of the Technology and Engineering business group. In addition, Tencent has not disclosed the whereabouts of Bo Liefeng, the former head of the Hunyuan multimodal model department. Meanwhile, there have been reports in recent days that Hu Han, the head of Hunyuan multimodal understanding, has resigned. Former OpenAI researcher Tian Yonglong is expected to take over Hu Han’s work, but Tencent has not responded. After merging the large language model and multimodal model departments, Yao Shunyu’s responsibilities have expanded. Tencent said this change will further improve model R&D and collaboration efficiency, helping to explore the upper limits of all-modal model intelligence.
