SEC Considering 24/7 Stock Trading: Is TradFi Morphing into a Crypto-Like Market? The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is looking into the possibility of a monumental shift in market infrastructure - a move towards a 24-hour trading system for U.S.
Equities markets.
The regulator recently revealed that it would host a public roundtable discussion on September 17, where various industry stakeholders would gather to deliberate on potential benefits and challenges associated with the expansion of trading hours. The topics set to be covered include overnight trading, market stability, and operational preparedness. Chairman Paul Atkins remarked that this would entail the advent of "a new day - and night - in the U.S. Equity markets,” stressing his intent to create American trading venues comparable to their counterparts operating around the clock or on a 24/7 basis in global economies.
This move into potentially extending trading hours is not entirely new.
The SEC had already greenlit the 24X Exchange to begin extended trading activities, and the major US exchanges – the NYSE, Nasdaq, and Cboe – are all seeking permission to broaden their trading timetables. Behind this gradual push into expanding trading hours, one of the greatest catalysts has been the booming growth of crypto markets. From their inception, these digital exchanges have always provided uninterrupted 24/7 trading, allowing investors to react instantly to global market happenings at any time.
A shift towards the adoption of 24-hour stock trading could indeed offer new venues for global market participants, but the long overdue change will undoubtedly present numerous questions surrounding issues of market volatility, cybersecurity, liquidity and the protection of traders at large. An eventual transition into this type of model could signify a significant development in the field of financial infrastructure of the past few decades. It may well bring our financial exchanges more in line with the 24/7 trading paradigm which defines the digital asset economy.
In your view, is 24-hour stock trading the future, or will this idea be more beneficial than it would be risky?
