I once chatted with a friend about why so many celebrities are rushing to the United States to have children. I didn’t understand it at first.

They said this would give their kids more choices. I was still wondering: what exactly are these more choices? Is there anything wrong with having a child in mainland China?
It wasn’t until I was dealing with this kind of complicated visa paperwork that I finally understood that this was the reason. Kids born in the United States can enter many places without a visa, while kids born in mainland China often need visas for many places, which takes a lot of time and energy to prove.
At last, I understood the logic on a deeper level. No wonder so many people squeeze their way into getting a U.S. green card—for better resources and more choices. Of course, in China, there are also household registration benefit policies that differ.
It’s not blind admiration for foreign countries, either. In these past few years, I’ve been to several countries. Before I went, I was really excited and full of anticipation. But after coming back, I still feel that mainland China is great—whether it’s food, housing, or lifestyle. It’s just that when can China also have global visa-free entry? 😭
