Mars Finance reports that on July 24, according to South Korea’s “Electronic News,” the delivery lead times for major semiconductor manufacturing equipment have recently been extended to as long as twice the original period. In total, Applied Materials, ASML, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, and KLA account for about 70% of the global semiconductor equipment market, and their main equipment delivery lead times are generally extended to 1.5 to 2 times the original. Some equipment with a normal delivery cycle of 6 months now needs to wait about a year. Similar situations have also appeared among local South Korean equipment manufacturers. A Korean company that supplies front-end and back-end equipment to TSMC and Micron has seen some product delivery lead times extend from 3 to 4 months to 6 to 8 months; another Micron back-end equipment supplier has increased its delivery lead time to 1.5 times the original, with some equipment waiting times exceeding a year. Delays in equipment delivery may affect wafer fab timelines for planned production start dates. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have begun closely monitoring equipment delivery status and are considering placing purchase orders earlier than the original plan to reduce the risk that equipment cannot be delivered and installed on time. This round of extended delivery lead times differs from the supply chain disruptions during 2021 to 2022; it is mainly driven by increased chip demand from AI infrastructure investments, as countries and companies simultaneously expand wafer fabs, leading to a surge in equipment orders. As global wafer fab investment continues, shortages in supplies related to equipment and factory construction may persist.
