🇪🇺 EU Expands Belarus Crypto Sanctions Under MiCA Rules

The European Union has significantly tightened its crypto sanctions on Belarus, extending restrictions from custodial services to virtually all crypto activities regulated under MiCA.
Starting August 25, Belarusian citizens and residents will be prohibited from owning, controlling, or managing EU regulated crypto service providers. The expanded measures cover crypto exchanges, trading platforms, token swaps, order execution, portfolio management, and crypto investment advisory services.

Key developments:

• The new restrictions apply to all MiCA regulated crypto services, not just wallets and custody providers.
• The sanctions are part of the EU's latest measures targeting Belarus over its support for Russia's war in Ukraine.
• The decision officially took effect on July 24, with crypto specific provisions becoming enforceable on August 25.
• The EU also expanded transaction bans to 14 overseas crypto service platforms allegedly used to help Russia bypass sanctions.
• The move follows the end of MiCA's transitional period on July 1, when unauthorized crypto firms were required to cease operations or face enforcement.

The latest sanctions further demonstrate how crypto regulation is becoming an increasingly important tool in international sanctions policy, with MiCA now serving as a framework not only for market oversight but also for geopolitical enforcement.
