Been thinking a lot about Bitcoin lately. Over a trillion-dollar market cap, yet the vast majority of it still just sits there idle
I believe the biggest bottleneck in BTCFi has never been a lack of ideas.
The loss of true Bitcoin-native security are exactly why institutions and whales have stayed on the sidelines.
But this is changing now. A wave of projects is actually shipping solutions that keep BTC much closer to (or on) the Bitcoin base layer.
I spent this morning digging into who’s shipping rn 👇🏻
1/ @babylonlabs_io
– Native BTC staking directly on the Bitcoin base layer using cryptographic timelocks
– Holders keep full self-custody while earning yield by securing other PoS chains.
– Still the clear leader in native staking TVL ( ~$3.4B+).
2/ @Stacks (sBTC + ecosystem)
– The longest-running smart-contract layer on Bitcoin, using Clarity.
– sBTC brings BTC into native DeFi (Zest Protocol as the leading lending market, BitFlow DEX, Stacking DAO building stBTC liquid staking).
– Production apps are live; the goal is a full Bitcoin-native finance stack.
3/ Hashi on @SuiNetwork
– Primitive that lets you use native BTC as programmable collateral without moving it off the Bitcoin network.
– Testnet just went live, featuring a Guardian Layer (2-of-2 multisig) aimed at institutional lending, borrowing, and credit.
– Strong focus on institutional credit markets and yield products.
4/ @citrea_xyz
– ZK-rollup built on BitVM2, mainnet live since Jan2026.
– Final settlement remains on Bitcoin, enabling lending, trading, and structured products with near-native security.
– Ships with ctUSD stablecoin and a strong push into Bitcoin capital markets.

– Hybrid consensus that merges Bitcoin hash power with DPoS.
– Lets holders stake/delegate BTC from their own wallets for yield while preserving a high degree of self-custody.
Also worth watching: @TheTNetwork tBTC (more decentralized wrapping) and liquid staking layers @Lombard_Finance (built on top of Babylon) that help fill out the liquidity stack.
