Mars Finance news: The European Union has further tightened its crypto asset restriction measures targeting Belarus. It will ban Belarusian citizens and residents from owning, controlling, or managing crypto service providers regulated by the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Under Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1847 adopted by the EU Council, the measure is an expansion of the EU’s sanctions framework related to Belarus’s participation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The new rules will take effect on July 24, and the expanded restrictive measures targeting the crypto industry will be implemented starting August 25. Under MiCA definitions, the affected scope of services includes operating crypto trading platforms, crypto asset exchanges, executing and transmitting customer orders, crypto asset issuance services, asset transfer services, investment advice, and portfolio management, among others. The restrictions are being introduced as the MiCA transition period ends on July 1. Previously, the EU required unlicensed crypto businesses to stop the relevant activities, or otherwise face regulatory enforcement. The EU said that this expansion is part of its efforts to combat the use of crypto platforms to evade Russia-related sanctions. Earlier, in the EU’s 21st round of Russia sanctions packages, it expanded the trading ban to 14 crypto-related service platforms outside the EU and established a mechanism to allow future bans on trading with any foreign crypto service providers deemed to help Russia evade sanctions. Market participants noted that as the MiCA regulatory framework fully takes effect, the EU is further strengthening regulatory control over the crypto industry through a licensing system and sanctions mechanisms.
