The most expensive divorce case in South Korea.

SK hynix chairman Choi Tae-won was sentenced to pay his ex-wife $640 million, and he must pay in cash; his current net worth is about $5 billion.
Choi Tae-won’s ex-wife, Ryu Soo-young, is the daughter of former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, and they married in 1988. They have three children.
In 2015, Choi Tae-won suddenly announced his relationship with Ms. Kim Hee-young. He was convinced he had found true love; the two also had a daughter, and then he began pushing for divorce.
The lawsuit has been fought from 2017 to the present. In 2022, the first-instance ruling ordered 66.5B won. In 2024, the second-instance ruling increased it to 1.38 trillion won. This time, it was again raised to 944 billion won—14 times the first-instance ruling.
The court also ruled that if the divorce payment is not fully paid once the judgment finally takes effect, the unpaid portion will accrue 5% interest every year.
