Infidelity divorce comes with a brutal price 💔
SK Hynix chairman’s blockbuster divorce case: Chairman Choi Tae-won to pay his ex-wife about $643 million, set to become the largest divorce settlement in South Korean history
On July 24, SK Hynix’s billionaire Choi Tae-won saw his personal wealth surge sharply amid the AI boom. In a recent round of rulings, a South Korean court ordered him to pay his ex-wife 944 billion won (about $643 million) as a divorce property-division payment, bringing this long-running, high-priced divorce lawsuit close to the finish line.
If the ruling ultimately takes effect, it will be the largest divorce case in South Korean history.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Choi Tae-won’s current net worth is about $5.6 billion, and his net assets have more than doubled over the past year. At present, the court has not yet clarified whether this huge sum will be paid in cash or in stock.
It is reported that: In 1988, when South Korea’s economy was taking off, Choi Tae-won, the future leader of the SK Group, married Lu Suying, the daughter of then-president Roh Tae-woo. Korean newspapers dubbed their wedding the “wedding of the century.” The ceremony was held at the presidential residence, the Blue House, and just a few months before the wedding, Lu Suying’s father, Roh Tae-woo, had just been elected president of South Korea.
In 2015, by then Choi Tae-won had already become the chairman of SK Hynix. He publicly admitted to having an extramarital affair and said he had an illegitimate child, proposing to divorce Lu Suying. This fairy-tale-like model marriage, which was considered a model in South Korea, completely fell apart. At the time, Lu Suying firmly stated that she would stand by her family and refused to divorce.
In 2019, after all three children came of age, Lu Suying changed her stance and filed a counterclaim. No longer trying to salvage the marriage, she instead put forward demands for a high-value property division and compensation for mental damages.
