How can a person live up to themselves this way?
Wang Hong, a mathematician who won the Fields Medal
1. Born in Guilin, Guangxi; skipped two grades in primary school.
2. Entered Peking University at 16. She couldn’t get into the mathematics department as hoped, so from the very first day of enrollment she began preparing to transfer.
3. Studied courses in two majors at the same time; because of credit requirements, she could only self-study mathematical analysis.
4. Successfully transferred to the mathematics department in her second year, but her classmates were all champions of Olympic math contests. She wasn’t a competition student, and her performance was ordinary.
5. While pursuing graduate studies in Paris, she even considered switching careers to architecture. After getting lost, she still chose mathematics.
6. In her PhD at MIT, she met her advisor Goursat and entered the field of harmonic analysis.
7. She made major breakthroughs in areas including the Fourier restriction conjecture, the Furknar distance set, and planar Frensberg sets, among others. Her work was also included in the Fields Medal citation.
8. Solved the three-dimensional hanging dunes conjecture; a century-old problem was solved.
9. Qiu Changtong praised Wang Hong: “She is the greatest and most important Chinese scholar of the young generation.”
10. Promoted to a full professor at New York University. In the same year, she became the 14th tenured professor in the mathematics division of the French Institute for Advanced Research, and also its first Asian tenured professor.
11. Won the Fields Medal, known as the “Nobel Prize of the mathematics world.” This is the first time a Chinese national has received the Fields Medal. Wang Hong is also the third woman mathematician in the world to win the Fields Medal.
