Tesla plunges 14%! AI investment drags on profits and cash flow—Musk’s AI story hits challenges?
Recently, Tesla’s stock price has seen major fluctuations.
Down about 14% in a single day, with its market value evaporating by several hundred billion dollars.
The market is again discussing a question:
Is Tesla an automaker, or an AI technology company?
Over the past few years, Musk has repeatedly painted the market a huge AI future:
Autonomous driving.
Robotaxi.
Humanoid robots.
AI computing power.
These stories helped Tesla earn valuations far beyond those of traditional carmakers.
But now, the market is starting to re-examine:
When will these future values be realized in reality?
In this stock adjustment, the core contradiction is not simply car sales.
It’s this:
AI spending is increasing, but near-term profits and cash flow are under pressure.
To push its AI strategy, Tesla keeps investing in:
Autonomous driving R&D.
Dojo supercomputer.
Robotics projects.
Data training infrastructure.
These investments could be extremely important for the future.
But the biggest question the capital markets care about is:
When can the spending turn into profits?
In the past, the market was willing to give Tesla a high valuation.
Because investors weren’t buying just cars.
They were buying a future:
A tech company with AI capabilities.
If Robotaxi succeeds.
If FSD becomes commercialized at scale.
If the Optimus robots enter real-world applications.
Then Tesla’s market space could be completely different.
That’s also why Tesla has long enjoyed tech-stock valuations.
But now, there is disagreement in the market.
Bearish funds believe:
The AI story has already been priced into the stock.
Currently:
Automotive business growth is slowing.
Competitive pressure is increasing.
Profit margins are declining.
AI projects are still in the investment phase.
So the market is starting to demand:
Don’t just talk about the future.
You need to see the cash flow.
Meanwhile, bullish funds believe:
Tesla’s real value has never been about how many cars it sells today.
It’s whether it can become in the future:
An AI + robotics + energy platform.
If autonomous driving truly comes to fruition, the business model could change dramatically.
Traditional automobiles:
Sell one car.
Future Robotaxi:
Continuously generate service revenue.
This is also the direction Musk has always emphasized.
From an investment perspective, the market is now entering a critical phase.
Previously:
Telling stories could win a high valuation.
Now:
The market is starting to require validation.
What determines Tesla’s valuation in the future is not just sales.
But three variables:
First:
The commercialization pace of FSD autonomous driving.
This is the most core landing point of Tesla’s AI story.
Second:
Whether Robotaxi can form scalable revenue.
If it only shows technology without a business model, the valuation will face pressure.
Third:
Whether AI investment can improve long-term profit margins.
In the end, the capital markets are still watching:
Spending → efficiency gains → profit growth.
My take:
Tesla’s decline this time doesn’t mean the AI direction has failed.
It’s more like the market is shifting from “dream valuations” back to “performance validation.”
In the coming years, the AI industry will definitely create huge opportunities.
But not every AI-focused company will be a winner.
The real winners need to have all of:
Technology.
Data.
Commercialization capability.
Cash flow.
One sentence from the trading room:
In the past, the market rewarded Tesla for telling a future; now the market asks Tesla to prove that future. The biggest test in the AI era isn’t whose story is the biggest—it’s who can turn the story into profits.
