⚠️ IMF warns AI is reshaping the financial system, but simultaneous use could amplify volatility
On July 24, the IMF issued a clear warning: AI has already penetrated trading, credit, regulation, and infrastructure. But large-scale, synchronized use of the same type of models may trigger an “AI herd effect,” amplifying volatility during periods of market stress, and even leading to “flash crashes.”
There are three core risks: first, model homogenization—many institutions adjust positions at the same time based on similar data and signals; second, AI decision-making is opaque—in extreme markets, even large financial institutions struggle to explain the logic; third, infrastructure concentration—if a small number of cloud service providers or data suppliers run into problems, multiple institutions could be taken offline simultaneously.
For the crypto market, AI-driven quantitative trading and high-frequency signals are already widespread. If regulators tighten oversight and transparency requirements, some funds that rely on “black-box” strategies may face rising compliance costs. The IMF emphasized that AI should assist rather than replace human decision-making—an added dose of calm amid the current AI-narrative frenzy.
