OpenAI is being sued again—this time by a U.S. pastor.

He said he felt dizzy so severely that he could only crawl to the bathroom. ChatGPT still didn’t tell him to seek immediate medical care; instead, it taught him how to crawl back to his recliner to keep resting.
A month later, he was admitted to the ICU after suffering a bilateral massive pulmonary embolism.
The pastor, 55 years old, had long been using GPT to ask health questions.
At first, GPT would still remind him to see a doctor, but those reminders grew fewer over time. The model began to interpret his test results for him, arrange supplements and medication, and even design a “recliner recovery plan” for him.
Once, while delivering a sermon, he suddenly became severely dizzy and couldn’t continue the service. GPT interpreted his symptoms as the nervous system “recalibrating,” told him to relax, and sent him home to continue lying down.
Later, members of his church urged him to go to the hospital, but GPT told him that those people “don’t understand” the recovery approach he was using.
In the hours before he went into the ICU, he asked GPT again why his groin hurt when he pressed it. GPT said it was just a “minor detour,” not dangerous.
He then developed breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, palpitations, and vomiting, and finally called 911 himself.
The pastor is now accusing OpenAI of having product design defects, failing to adequately warn users, and allegedly practicing medicine without a license.
At the time, he was using GPT-4o in the regular ChatGPT, not the later launched ChatGPT Health. He is asking the court to pause ChatGPT Health until an independent organization completes a safety audit.
OpenAI responded that ChatGPT cannot replace doctors and should not be used for diagnosis or treatment.
