Wall Street Slides as Oil Surges Above $100, Weighing on Crypto Market Sentiment

U.S. stock markets closed sharply lower on Thursday as escalating tensions in the Middle East sent oil prices soaring above $100 per barrel and triggered a broad sell-off across technology stocks. The combination of rising energy prices, higher Treasury yields, and disappointing corporate earnings has also created a cautious backdrop for cryptocurrency markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 400 points, while the S&P 500 lost 1.2%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite suffered the biggest decline, dropping 2.2% as major technology companies came under pressure.

Oil Rally Sparks Market Concerns

Investor sentiment deteriorated after renewed geopolitical tensions pushed crude oil prices to their highest levels in months.

Brent crude surged above $100 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed above $92 following reports of attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea and heightened tensions involving the United States and Iran.

Rising oil prices have renewed concerns that inflation could remain elevated, making it more difficult for central banks to begin easing monetary policy.

Higher Energy Prices Push Treasury Yields Higher

As oil prices climbed, U.S. Treasury yields also moved higher.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose above 4.7%, reaching its highest level since early 2025, while the two-year yield climbed above 4.35%. Rising bond yields reflect growing expectations that the Federal Reserve could keep interest rates higher for longer.

According to market pricing, investors are now assigning a significantly higher probability of another interest rate hike in September compared with just a week ago.

Higher interest rates generally reduce demand for risk assets such as growth stocks and cryptocurrencies by increasing the attractiveness of safer fixed-income investments.

Big Tech Earnings Disappoint

Technology stocks added further pressure to the broader market after mixed quarterly earnings reports.

Alphabet shares declined sharply after the company raised its capital expenditure outlook for 2026, signaling continued heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. While AI demand remains strong, investors have become increasingly cautious about the massive spending required to support future growth.

Tesla also posted one of the day's largest losses after reporting quarterly earnings that fell below expectations. Higher operating expenses and negative free cash flow weighed heavily on investor confidence, sending the stock significantly lower.

Other major technology companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, also finished the session in negative territory.

What It Means for Crypto

Although the sell-off originated in traditional financial markets, cryptocurrencies could also experience increased volatility.

Digital assets often react to broader macroeconomic conditions, particularly when investors reduce exposure to riskier investments. Rising oil prices, higher Treasury yields, and uncertainty surrounding future Federal Reserve policy may continue influencing Bitcoin and the broader crypto market in the near term.

At the same time, institutional ETF inflows and improving regulatory developments remain supportive long-term factors that could help offset macroeconomic headwinds once market sentiment stabilizes.
