The impact of attacks on oil tankers on global shipping is too big. It’s good that France has stepped in to mediate, but just calling for restraint probably won’t help much, given how complex geopolitics is.

Saudi oil tankers are their economic lifeline; what the Houthi forces are doing is essentially choking the neck. It’s good that France is calling for a ceasefire, but don’t forget that the Yemen civil war has been going on for so many years—interests are deeply entangled, and a single statement can’t solve it. Hopefully the international community can apply greater pressure; otherwise oil prices will have to rise again.

The Houthis attacking Saudi oil tankers is not the first time, and the Red Sea shipping route has never been peaceful. As a major European power, France speaking out is a way of signaling the international community’s position, but if the problem is to be truly resolved, it still has to rely on the United Nations and Saudi Arabia themselves. That said, oil transportation security affects global energy prices, and everyone is watching closely.
