On July 23, news said that, as reported yesterday by CCTV News, the Hengshan County People’s Court in Hunan recently concluded a case involving the use of AI software to forge images of fruit rotting, tricking e-commerce platforms into providing “refund only.”
Local resident Tan Moumou placed frequent orders for high-priced fruits such as durian and cherries from October 2025 to January 2026. After receiving the goods, he used an AI photo-editing software to falsify images showing the fruit had spoiled and grown mold, and then applied for “refund only without returning the goods” on the grounds that the product had quality issues.
Because of Tan Moumou’s conduct, multiple e-commerce platforms at the time marked Hengshan County as a high-risk area, and residents of the county were once unable to buy durian and cherries on the platforms.
After trial, the court found that within four months Tan Moumou placed a cumulative total of more than 100 orders, illegally obtaining 60 single fruits of golden pillow durian weighing 9 to 10 jin per fruit, as well as five boxes of extra-large cherries packaged in 5-jin packs. After appraisal by the Hengshan County Price Authentication Center, the total value involved in the case was more than 16,000 yuan.
