🇺🇸BREAKING: Google grew Cloud 82% in a single quarter and Wall Street still sold the stock down 5%.

That's the story. Here's why it matters for every Big Tech earnings report the rest of this year.
Alphabet put up $119.8B in Q2 revenue, beat on top and bottom lines, and reported $24.77B in Cloud revenue, 82% growth year over year, the fastest the division has ever posted as a standalone segment. By any normal earnings scorecard, that's a blowout. The stock should have run.
Instead, CFO Anat Ashkenazi got on the call and raised full-year 2026 capex guidance to $195–205B, up from $180–190B last quarter, and told analysts to expect the number to "increase significantly" again in 2027. Consensus had been sitting at $188B. The stock dropped 5% within minutes.
What makes this remarkable is that the spending is working. An 82% Cloud growth rate is not a company bleeding money into a hole. It's a company with real demand, a $514B backlog, and Cloud operating margins that expanded from 20.7% to 35.6% in a year. The revenue is following the capex. The unit economics are improving. And the market still punished it.
The reason is that $44.9B in quarterly capex pushed Alphabet into negative free cash flow for the first time in its public history. Negative. A company with $240B in cash and marketable securities technically burned more than it generated in a quarter because it spent so aggressively on infrastructure. That number, not the Cloud beat, is the one Wall Street is anchoring on.
This is the AI capex doom loop and it's going to play out identically at Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon this cycle. The spending number has gotten large enough that it scares analysts on its own, independent of whether the revenue it produces justifies it. Alphabet just proved you can grow a division at 82% and still get sold off because the spending line frightens the model more than the growth line flatters it.
The market isn't pricing AI wrong. It's pricing capex certainty against revenue optionality, and right now the capex is a known hard number while the AI revenue payoff still lives in future quarters. Every hyperscaler that raises guidance this earnings season is going to get the same treatment until one of them posts free cash flow that closes that gap.
Google just handed the Street the template. Watch how the others get read.
