Liang Wenfeng: The strongest models will also be open-sourced, because there’s no benefit to closed-source if you can’t see it.

Golden Finance reported that on July 23, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng said at a recent investor exchange meeting, “I think we will open-source, and our strongest model may also be open-sourced. Because I can’t see any advantages to keeping things closed. Even if the model is open-sourced, telling everyone everything still comes with a very high threshold. For others to use it, the threshold is also very high. When we only earn six times the profit, open-sourcing won’t have much impact. But if you want to earn one hundred times the profit, then open-sourcing indeed will affect your ability to earn one hundred times the profit.
We were open-sourcing originally as well; it won’t be affected just because you’re a competitor. This is also part of being open-source. I’m not worried that others will deploy our models to compete with us. I even hope they can deploy them. What I’m worried about is that they can’t deploy them—if they don’t get some details right, the results will be worse, or the costs will be relatively higher.
The open-source models we provide are the same as the models we deploy ourselves. We won’t open-source a mediocre model and then use a better one when we deploy it ourselves. Last year, throughout the whole year, on the consumer side I was basically open-sourcing everything, and we didn’t see any conflicts on the consumer-side services.”
