Coinbase has launched a new office at Leveoff Pier No. 1 in Singapore and plans to increase its local headcount from about 150 to 200 by the end of 2026, with a focus on expanding its engineering, customer service, customer relations, and institutional sales teams. The hiring drive comes in contrast to Coinbase’s recent layoffs of roughly 14% globally. The company says Singapore is one of its fastest-growing international markets. Previously, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said in a CNBC interview on Capitol Hill in the U.S. that if the U.S. fails to pass clear crypto legislation, Coinbase will still continue building the company in the U.S., but some parts of the business may shift to offshore markets with clearer rules. Adding 150 people to reach 200 is really only 50 more positions. Compared with the scale of global layoffs of 14%, it feels more like a PR move than a real expansion.

For the crypto industry, the clearer the rules are, the more willing people are to invest—and Singapore’s move is a precise strike at the weak spot of US regulation.

While laying off employees worldwide, it’s also expanding hiring in Singapore—this move really doesn’t make sense. Are they using the money from American employees to support an Asia team?

Brian Armstrong says with his mouth that he will continue building in the United States, but in his actions he’s being honest—his office has already moved to Raffles Quay, a classic case of “moving with the times.”
