According to Yonhap News Agency, Mirae Asset Consulting (a non-financial subsidiary of South Korea’s Mirae Asset Group), said it obtained 91.73% of shares in the Korean crypto exchange Korbit on July 22, and plans to acquire the remaining 5.42% of shares on July 24. After the transaction is completed, its ownership stake will reach 97.15%. The total consideration for this acquisition is about 141.37B won (about $102 million). Korbit said that existing services will remain unchanged, and users’ assets and deposits will continue to be kept separately in accordance with South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act and the company’s assets. The deal also means that, for the first time, a South Korean traditional financial group has brought a domestic crypto exchange under its umbrella.

Under strict regulation in South Korea, traditional financial groups are acquiring exchanges, showing that compliance is a clear trend. The separate custody and protection of users’ assets gives people peace of mind.
